Cowboys rookie kicker on the verge of setting NFL record

Although 28 is a little old for a first-year NFL player, Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey is no ordinary rookie.

A former first-round MLS SuperDraft pick of Toronto FC, Aubrey only transitioned to American football in 2022 after his soccer career didn’t pan out. Now the starting kicker for the Cowboys, Aubrey is just three kicks away from breaking the NFL record for most made field goals to start a career.

The current record is 18, set by Travis Coons with the Cleveland Browns in 2015. Kai Forbath and Chandler Catanzaro are tied for second, each making their first 17 kicks in 2012 and 2014, respectively, while Aubrey is tied with Austin Seibert and Garrett Hartley, who connected on their first 16 field goals.

"[Aubrey] can crush it," Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters after Monday’s win over the Chargers in which Aubrey kicked the winning field goal. "He is so consistent. I enjoy watching him work. He is off to a great start. I don't know that I have seen a start like this in my time with a kicker."

Aubrey is also tied for the second-most made field goals this season, trailing only Forbath, and he and Tennessee’s Nick Folk are the only kickers to attempt 15 or more field goals without a miss.

The 2023 season is Aubrey’s first in the NFL and it’s just his second year playing competitive football.

He played for the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions the last two seasons, making 32 of 37 field goal attempts and 57 of 59 extra point attempts and earning him a contract with the Cowboys in July ahead of training camp, where he beat out Tristan Vizcaino for the starting job.

“To know his story and following him when he was in the USFL and then for us to take a chance on him when we had another kicker in the preseason,” Dak Prescott told reporters on Monday. “He's an athlete playing kicker. When you have that, he has been a professional in soccer, in another football league and now in the NFL, he is mature as hell.”
