Green Bay Packers Converting Former Quarterback to Wide Receiver
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

One of the interesting takeaways from the 2024 NFL offseason to this point for the Green Bay Packers has been a position they haven’t added any players to. Through free agency, the 2024 NFL Draft and the undrafted free agent signing wave, Green Bay didn’t add a single wide receiver.

Taking a look at the Packers’ depth chart at the position, it is easy to see why. They are loaded with high-upside, young talent as every player at the position has two or fewer years of NFL experience under their belt.

The inexperience showed at times during the 2023 season, but with a year of development and building chemistry with quarterback Jordan Love, things should reach a new level in 2024. But, there was an interesting change in the wide receiver depth chart for eagle-eyed Packers fans.

In the days following the NFL Draft, quarterback Alex McGough is now listed as a wide receiver. A USFL MVP, McGough joined the Packers during the 2023 offseason and played well enough to stick around for the entire season.

McGough earned the No. 3 quarterback job in 2023, beating out Danny Etling. He was on the practice squad and the emergency quarterback with fifth-round rookie Sean Clifford handling backup duties behind Love.

With no real path to the 53-man roster, after the Packers used a seventh-round pick on Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt, this could be a last-ditch effort for McGough to garner some attention to stay in Green Bay or latch on elsewhere eventually. Pratt is expected to battle for the backup job with Clifford, leaving no space for McGough.

McGough has no previous experience listed when it comes to playing wide receiver. Listed at 6’3” and weighing 213 pounds, he certainly has the size to draw some attention for the position. But, his athletic testing numbers, which are good for a quarterback, leave something to be desired for a wide receiver.
